Wara Ningyo (藁人形), meaning “straw doll,” is a traditional Japanese figure deeply rooted in folklore and spiritual rituals. Often associated with Ushi no Koku Mairi (丑の刻参り), a midnight curse ritual, the straw doll represents vengeance, resentment, and the darker side of human emotions.
Traditionally used to symbolically bring misfortune upon others, Wara Ningyo reflects the powerful connection between human emotions and intentions.
As an amulet, it takes on a different meaning, becoming Migawari (身代わり), meaning “substitute” or “taking one's place.” Rather than bringing harm, it symbolically absorbs misfortune and negative energy on behalf of the wearer, serving as a reminder of protection, resilience, and turning negativity into strength.
