Its design is based on a monk named Bodhidharma, who’s said to have meditated in complete stillness for nine years, staring at a wall without blinking. Even the beard has meaning, shaped to resemble cranes and tortoises, both traditional symbols of long life. You’ll often see lucky words painted on the chest too.
