Maneki-neko
To most people, the Maneki-neko is just a waving cat sitting near the front of a shop or restaurant. But behind that raised paw is centuries of meaning. These are a few things we’ve learned that stayed with us.
1. The Beckoning Cat
The Maneki-neko literally means “beckoning cat.” Unlike the Western wave, the raised paw in Japan is a gesture inviting things toward you. Depending on which paw is raised, the meaning changes. One invites customers and opportunity, the other invites luck and protection.
2. Luck Through Persistence
There are many stories behind the Maneki-neko, but one of the most famous tells of a poor temple cat that saved a travelling samurai by beckoning him away from a lightning strike. That single gesture changed the temple’s future forever.
3. More Than Wealth
People often associate the Maneki-neko with money, but traditionally it represents much more than financial luck. Protection, good relationships, safe journeys, happiness, and peace are all tied to the cat as well.
Different colours even carry different meanings. White for positivity and purity. Gold for prosperity. Black for protection. Red for good health.
